1) Continuous Play / Conditioning - Box lacrosse is played in a rink with boards where the ball rarely goes out of bounds. Once it does it comes back in and the play is started immediately. Playing box will not only help you conditioning it will also help everyone learn both ends of the floor. Players end up playing both offense and defense at times. Playing offense as a defensive player is beneficial because if you learn what the offense is trying to do you'll learn how to defend it. Same goes for offensive players playing defense.

Benefits of Box Lacrosse

3) Defenders use short sticks - Having a short stick on defense will require you to improve other parts of your game to make up for the 3 less feet you have to play defense. Where in field you can keep the offensive player away from you with your stick in box you have to learn how to use your body and control the offensive players positioning. Communication is also required as a big part of the  box game. Box offense is primarily a lot of pick and roll 2 man game. In order to defend that defenses must communicate switches and such. This will improve defenders communication for outdoor where they'll have more room to make the same decisions that they have to make in split seconds indoor.

5) Physical Play - Many players offensively are uncomfortable when playing against a player who is extremely aggressive and physical. Box requires a lot of physical contact (NOT big hits but bumping and equal pressure). Getting comfortable with the ball under pressure and making smart decisions will help once again when you get outdoor. When you're able to run with someone on your hip outdoor and still keep your head up and make a successful feed or shot you're going to be a much more dangerous player.

4) Offensive Decision making and stickwork - Box offense is a constant motion offense and there is limited space with 10 players all in one zone of the field at once. Understanding how to read the defense and see the openings and passes will be paramount in running a successful offense. Stickskills are greatly improved in box because you have less space to work with and feeds, shots and cuts need to be tighter in order to be successful. Again if you're able to score on a box goalie, when you get outdoor on a larger net with a smaller goalie you should see a significant improvement in shooting percentages.

2) Smaller sized field - The games are also played in a smaller field then outdoor where there are 5 players along with a goalie. Everyone uses short sticks as well. Having to play on a smaller surface will require everyone both offensively and defensively think faster and make quicker smart decisions. After playing box for a winter when players get back outdoor on a full field the game seems much slower and decisions are made at a much higher level.

"I believe that box lacrosse gives young people many more opportunities to excel in our game. If I had my choice, I would have every player under the age of twelve play box lacrosse exclusively or at least a majority of the time. The number of touches of the ball and the ability to develop better stick skills in a game of box lacrosse, far surpasses what happens to young people on a 110 x 60 yard field. Learning how to pass and catch in traffic, understanding how to shoot, and developing a sense of physicality are all positive traits developed by the box game." ~ Bill Tierney
